New York in the 1940's
As the situation in Europe became dangerous, Fred Stein and his family managed to escape to New York in 1941. New York was a stimulating place for him: the beauty and geometry of the city; its electricity as a center of world events. The cultural cross-currents enthralled him; he ranged with his camera from Fifth Avenue to Wall Street to Harlem. Prosperous bankers, homeless people, children playing, working -class ethnic groups; he found dignity and humanness in all types of street life, and lingering vistas of a city larger than life.
